Something New (This Week)
The season of newsletters, dumb playlists, and revisiting your old self (and old movies)
Happy Saturday. I was sick this week, and had to cancel my Halloween plans for the second consecutive year. From the depths of social despair, I had a fruitful week of reading and listening to and watching stuff. Here’s the highlights.
A newsletter
My internet neighbor (a new online-relationship term I’m coining) started a newsletter. They’ve long-since proven their ability to think about things, and then translate thoughts onto the internet, and now they’re doing it in a bi-weekly, longer format. Two releases so far, both nourishing. Get in while the getting’s good.
Some music
On Monday, the wonderful disc-jockey at KMHD played a song from a favorite group of mine, Mammal Hands. Whenever I hear Mammal Hands, I think of another artist I enjoy and should listen to more: Robohands. Huh. “____ Hands”. Maybe that’s a playlist.
It was. It is:
A look in the rearview
Just this morning, BlueSky, of all places, showed me this piece about a critic revisiting himself, and a movie he didn’t care for, and it was a wonderful read about anxiety and fitting in and pursuing creativity and contextualizing in the moment versus in retrospect. Great stuff.
Finally, here’s all the movies I watched since I last wrote, and my recommendation for if the average Jane should watch them.
IT’S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN (1966) - please [AppleTV+]
FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) - unfortunately no [HBO Max]
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) - yes [HBO Max]
CURE (1997) - maybe the best thing i’ve ever seen (yes) [Criterion Channel]
PROM NIGHT (1980) - sure [Peacock]
A HAUNTING IN VENICE (2023) - sure [Peacock]
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON (2023) - please [theaters for one more week, eventually AppleTV+]
That’s it for this week. Let’s keep it simple.
TTFN,
B
